NE Proper

Northeast Portland has many wonderful neighborhoods; Irvington was made famous by the Author Beverly Cleary who set her Ramona and Beezus stories in her childhood neighborhood of Irvington. Irvington has the Normal Rockwell-esque large tree lined sidewalks, with fairly level lawns, and homes designed with Craftsman, Prairie, English, Traditional and a few Victorian styles. Irvington goes between NE 7^th to NE 39^th and is bordered by Broadway to 39^th Avenue, which begins the Alameda neighborhood.

Alameda is another popular Northeast side neighborhood, and sits up on a bluff with a nice view of Portland. Here you will find homes from modest bungalows to 3 and 4 story stately homes on larger lots, similar to those found in Irvington. Both Alameda and Irvington have easy access to the bustling Broadway and Fremont streets full of enticing restaurants, shops, boutiques and many parks including Wilshire Park, Grant Park, and Irving Park.

Laurelhurst is another stately and impressive Northeast neighborhood. This neighborhood was designed by the Olmstead Brothers, who also designed New York’s Central Park, Portland’s Washington Park and Westover Terraces in NW Portland. Laurelhurst was designed as an exclusive development in 1911, with stately homes on large lots. Laurelhurst Park has a beautiful spring fed lake. The remnants of the Historic Laurelhurst gates are still present today. Access to downtown is a straight shot across the Burnside Bridge.

Northeast Portland has many wonderful neighborhoods featuring such architects as Charles Ertz, Alfred Faber, John Virginius Bennes, William Grey Purcell and Joseph Jacobberger.
